I’ve got quite a few things in the works, as well as some life changes that are going on. I’m writing this from the road, specifically Tennessee. For many musicians like myself, Nashville holds a special place in our hearts as a place of opportunity and dreams. Much like LA is for actors.
As I’m looking forward to the future and my next 5 years, I’m also moving forward with where I am now. I’m kind of learning how to balance the future happiness and the present happiness. Some things are changing in the way I work, and I just wanted to give you a bit of an idea of where my head’s at right now.
The last year or so has been incredibly busy. Lots of playing, traveling, teaching, etc… That’s not really changing, if anything it’s getting busier. I’m in work mode right now, and I hope to be more frequent with my posts in the future.
One thing that I wanted to talk a little about is my home studio. I’m in the process of building a home/mobile recording rig which will allow me to record for people from anywhere, as well as score and compose original music. Film scoring has always been a passion of mine. And writing my own music has been something I’ve been needing to get more into. I’d hate to make this sound like a “I’m looking for work” speech, but in a way I am. I have quite a few projects already but I’m always looking for more to do.
Another thing that I wanted to talk about is I’m transitioning away from doing in person guitar lessons, to doing Skype and YouTube lessons. Many of you know that I teach for the New Life School of Worship, and I’ll still be continuing that. But as far as doing lessons on my own outside of the school, this would be a much more effective way for me to achieve my goals.
I know for some of you this may just seem like a “why is he telling me this” type of post, but a lot of you have invested in me and I just wanted to keep you all up to date in what’s going on with me.
If you’re looking for guitar lessons, from anywhere in the world, let me know and we will work something out. And if you’re looking for a guitarist to play on your next song/record/ep let me know. Having a personal studio makes things a lot easier. As far as scoring goes, I’m not quite there yet. Hopefully very soon though.
As always, have a great day and feel free to send me any comments or questions.
And lots of cool videos and info. Check it out!

Catering to the P&W scene, but these can apply to anybody.

(Taken from http://www.guitarforworship.com/?p=4467)

On most momentary tap tempo switches, the tempo is counted when your foot releases the switch, not when your foot hits the switch.

Tubes last longer in heads because there is less speaker vibration.

Turn the mix down on your delays.

More volume, less drive on overdrive pedals.

Amp set to the verge of breakup, push it with pedals. Or amp drive set to your highest gain, and use your volume knob or a volume pedal as your drive control.

Volume pedal first in chain to be used as a volume knob, after drives before effects for swells, end of chain for a master volume control. Or, get 3 volume pedals.

Do not use flange.

Give it more emotion. Always, always, more emotion. That one thing will matter more than anything you can spend money on or even practice.

Those cushion things that you pay money for so that your amp can sit on them and give less vibration and hence less volume? Ya, those don’t work. Just turn your amp down and play better.

If it seems too wacky to be true, it probably is.

Your cables are not directional. And if electrons technically flow backwards through a cryogenically frozen vacuum of flux capacitance, or whatever the new internet site this week says from the guy trying to sell frozen vacuum’s of cable flux capacitors, a better position of your thumb on the string is going to make more of a tonal difference.

There is no one way to tone. ‘How do I sound like Hendrix, Stevie, Edge, and Andy Summers?’ I don’t know. All had great tone, all had wildly different ways of approaching it.

That is not the holy grail of tone. I don’t care what you’re looking at buying right now on Gear Page, with another tab open watching a youtube demo of it, while the manual downloads. It’s not it.

Modulation can cover for lack of tubes. Listen to some of Edge’s clean tone on The Unforgettable Fire. Or, maybe you just need a Roland JC120.

Uh still…get a tube amp.

If your tone sounds different everywhere, it’s time for a real power conditioner. And not the rackmount power strip with lights.

Your ears are usually better than the internet.

Blind tests are your friend. Have your wife or girlfriend turn on and off different pedals while you play with your eyes closed. Then take her to dinner that doesn’t have a drive-thru, a movie that doesn’t have ‘Avengers’ in the title, and repeat for a few days.

There’s this incredibly small window where people respect your pedalboard. An inch smaller and you’re a noob, and an inch bigger and you’re a prima donna.

If it makes you happy, then it’s good tone.

Delay repeats up, mix down for ambience.

Your amp sounds different depending on where you stand. Stack it on something, or eq it with your ear where the mic’s at.

If it sounds good, use it. If it sounds bad, don’t. You’d think we wouldn’t have to remind ourselves of this, but the internet is a harsh mistress.

Shimmer is overused. Doesn’t make it sound bad.

Plug your amp and your board into the same power strip/source for less hum.

Amp volume up, back off on finger and pick attack. More power, more finesse. Less power, less finesse.

Practice. It never changes.

New strings. Those need to change. About every couple weeks or so.

Don’t time your trem’s so much.

Don’t tread on the vocals.

If you’re not having fun anymore, something needs to change.

If you find yourself leading worship and more excited over getting to look up what pedals Nigel uses to get the tones in the setlist, rather than how the setlist is going to glorify God, reach the congregation, and what you can do to help…something needs to change.

Production has become overrated. Working hard has become underrated.

Try a little less compression. On everything. Just try it.

A little noise never hurt anybody.

And my personal favorite…the guy’s who scoff at expensive amps and pedals, yet must record everything in a ‘studio.’ Your guitar does not need Pro Tools and a 78 channel mixer to sound good. Just once I want to see someone ask the producer to make their guitar sound like George Harrison, and for the producer to turn off all his gear, take out an old tape deck, connect a mic to it, and put the mic on the amp grill. Secondly, most ‘studios’ got all their gear at that Guitar Center you make fun of so much.

Okay…now I’m just plain listening to too much Katherine Baker and Son House. So take everything I’ve said here with a grain of salt. Then, realize I’m right, throw that salt over your left shoulder, and don’t hit Sea Bass

:)

This is a great video tackling the issue of Gear Dysfunction. We all have those moments when our guitar/amp/effects sound great, but then what about those times where it seems that no matter what you do, it’s impossible to get a decent sound out of your rig. A lot of guitarists tend to want to ditch their rig and go buy something else. That’s rarely ever the answer. Sure there’s a lot to be said about good quality equipment, but there’s a lot more to “bad tone” than your rig.

I love this guy’s videos.

My gear.

I just thought I’d share with you a little bit about the gear that I use and why/how I use it during the weeks at church, in the studio, on tour, and random events. I’ll try to provide pictures as much as I can, but you should get the general gist of it.

(edit) sorry for the “live” shots, it’s the best I could do…

Guitars:

Gibson Les Paul Standard Plus (2002)

This guitar I saw in the shop, and I wanted it immediately because it looked like the one Jimmy Page used. He’s hands down my all-time favorite guitarist. Got it brand new when I was still a teenager and it’s one of the few pieces of gear that I know for a fact I’ll never get rid of. It’s got Burstbucker Pro’s in it, which I feel capture the late 50’s Gibson tone really well. It’s one of those guitars that inspires me just from looking at it.

Fender ‘69 Telecaster reissue (MIJ)

This guitar has the biggest story. At the time when I got it, I was in a band in upstate NY, and all of the band members (except for me) worked in this guitar store. They had two ‘69 teles, one made in Mexico (that was previously owned by a family friend who takes great care of his instruments), and this one. This guitar was totally trashed. It looked awful, sounded even worse than it looked, and played horribly. I bought it because they gave it to me for extremely cheap, and I planned to use it as a “beater guitar”. Over time, with minor upgrades, it eventually became my main guitar. I traded a guy a vintage phaser for a new set of Lace Sensor pickups and they sound great!

Fender ‘72 Telecaster Deluxe reissue

This guitar I got because at the time, I was afraid to take my Les Paul on trips. Every time I’d fly with it, the neck would need adjusting and the intonation would get out of whack. So I wanted a humbucker guitar, that would be impossible to demolish. I debated between this guitar and the Fender Blacktop series Tele’s, but I settled on this one. I’ve always wanted to try a 70’s style deluxe after seeing a picture of Thom Yorke from Radiohead using one. It’s a great guitar, and the pickups actually sound near-identical to real 70’s wide-range humbuckers.
All of my guitar parts from the Desperation Band album, Center Of It All, were done with this guitar.

Amps:

Vox AC15c1

I’ve always wanted to try a Vox, but I never liked the sound of the Custom Classic series. But when I heard that they re-did their base line of amps, I became interested. It’s a great amp, has all that classic Vox “chime” to it. It’s got a Celestion Greenback in it, and I use JJ power tubes. I did the “bright cap” mod to the Top Boost channel which really opened up the tone of the amp. All of my overdubs on the New Life Worship record, You Hold It All, were done with this amp.

Fender Pro Jr

This amp has been with me a very long time. I had a ‘59 Bassman reissue that I loved, but it was just too big and loud. So I sold it and got the Pro Jr to replace it, and I love it. It’s probably been the amp I’ve recorded with the most.

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

These are the amps we have at the church as our “house amps”, and it’s the amp that I used to record with on Center Of It All. I typically set the controls as such:

(numbers on faceplate, not oclock)

Vol 4-5

Bass 3

Middle 5

Treble 6-7

Presence 3-4

Everything else off, and run through the clean channel. I get great results with these settings and it gives me just a great, basic Fender tone.

Pedals:

This is all subject to change, as it changes frequently. But here’s what I’m using (in order of signal path)…

Zvex Fuzz Factory.

I’ve used quite a few fuzz pedals, and probably the first ever boutique pedal I bought, was a fuzz pedal. Ever since I heard Hendrix for the first time, I had to have that sound. The Zvex is probably the most versatile out of any that I’ve used. It stacks really well too, meaning I can have my regular overdrive/distortion tone going, and turn the Fuzz Factory on top of that, and it works. Most fuzz pedals don’t play well with other pedals, but this one does.

Red Witch mini compressor.

I’ve never been a huge fan of compression. Most compressor’s that I’ve tried have completely squashed my dynamics and killed my tone. But this is the first one I’ve tried that keeps all my dynamics in tact, but yet still compresses everything. I don’t know how it does it, and frankly I don’t care, I’m just glad it works the way I want it to!

Kent Pedals Tranny boost.

This is my most recent pedal (as of yet) and one that I’m digging the most. I’ve always been a fan of boost pedals. I tend to run my amps pretty hot, and usually my Les Paul doesn’t like overdrive pedals, but a boost pedal with it sounds incredible. The thing I like most about it, is the presence (or sparkle) that it adds. Most boosts that I’ve tried just boost your volume, but then you have too much low end and you end up with a bit of a flubby tone. The Kent adds in some presence which really translates well at gigging volumes, and lets the amp distort in a very musical way. It’s been my main overdrive sound lately.

Ibanez TS9 (808 modded)

If you have a ts9, please get it modded to 808 specs. You get more volume, smoother gain, more gain, and better tone control. It’s great when I want that classic, midrangy, tubescreamer sound.

Paul Cochran Timmy

This is probably my favorite overdrive pedal ever. It’s transparent, in that it lets the natural sound of whatever guitar and amp you’re using, shine through. It doesn’t change the tone of anything, it just adds some gain to it. Definitely the most usable overdrive I’ve tried.

Boss TU2

Been my faithful tuner for about 15 years now. Hasn’t broke once, and I don’t expect it to. If it ever does, I’ll probably get the TU3, but until then, it’s still kicking and keeping me in tune!

Line 6 M9

This is my workhorse of a pedal. As you probably know, it does so much. So I’m just going to tell you what I’m using it for at the moment.

First set of effects I use an expression pedal with. The Volume Pedal, and Pitch Glide (up 1 octave).

Second set of effects are my tap delays. Top is Digital Delay set to quarter note tap, and bottom is Digital Delay w/mod set to dotted eighth tap.

Third set of effects are various. Top is Analog Chorus, bottom is Opto Tremelo set to sixteenth tap tempo, and Octo Reverb (on another scene, all the other effects are the same).

Boss PS3

This is kind of my secret weapon pedal. I don’t use any of the pitch shifting on it, but I use what’s called Mode 7. It’s a reverse delay, that’s a bit unique. Every other repeat is reversed, and I set the delay level slightly higher than my dry signal. It’s my main “ambience” pedal.

Boss RV5

Pretty much just keep this on the Modulation setting. It just sounds so good!

Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man

This is my main pedal, the one I can’t live without. I’ve had to re-solder this I don’t know how many times. I never turn it off. If I don’t want any of the delay, I just turn the blend knob down so the repeats are not audible. The modulation is great, I keep it on the Vibrato setting usually. And the preamp in it rocks, my entire signal goes through all these pedals then hits the preamp of the DMM, and it adds some juice back to my signal.

Cables

I’m in love with Planet Waves. I used to not care about cables, but once I wired up my entire rig with Planet Waves, I got back a lot of clarity that I lost before. And over time, I noticed that not one of them broke! I used to have to buy a new cable every few months. These have lasted me over 2 years so far and not one has broke on me. I use the pedalboard kit, and the American Stage 30ft’s for my leads.

Strings

I’ve been a D’Addario user my entire life. I like the EXL116’s. They are 11’s but with a heavier bottom end on the wound strings. Give me a bit more chunk when I need it.

Pedalboard

I’ve been using Pedaltrain pedalboards for the last few years, the Pedaltrain 2 to be exact. I find it to be the perfect balance in size and weight for me. I used a Pedaltrain Pro for a little while, but it was just too big. The design of the Pedaltrain is amazing, and the flightcase you get with it will hold up to anything.

Slides

I really like the Planet Waves large glass slides. They are the thickest you can get, which with glass, gives the most sustain I’ve found.

Picks

I’ve been using Dunlop .88mm nylon ones most of my life, and I just can’t seem to get away from them. I hold them sideways so the rounded part is what touches the strings. And I like the grip on them, not because I drop them, but because it “scrapes” the string. Kind of taking inspiration from The Edge on that one.

Cases

SKB has treated me great over the years. All of my guitars go in an SKB flightcase. When they get tossed around, the case absorbs all of the damage, leaving the guitar unscathed. For the pedalboard I really like the flightcase you get with Pedaltrain, it’s held up for over 3 years now.

Anyways, that’s about it. Feel free to leave any comments or questions that you might have.

The best part of waking up, is in your cup.

The best part of waking up, is in your cup.

The moon is so big tonight

I love prime lenses, especially when I get them at a good deal. Most people go for the 50 1.8 or the 1.4. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want the 50 1.2L, but I’m very happy with this lens. I enjoy doing macro photography. This is an old lens, but I found it to work very well.

For some reason this year happened so fast, it feels like yesterday I was in this exact same spot waiting for Christmas with my family. 2011 was a year of many firsts for me. When trying to reflect, I say to myself, “where do I begin?”.

A few of my favorite moments:

The year kicked off with a trip with the Desperation Band boys to Edmonton Canada. Early February, bitter cold, lots of snow, in the mid-western part of the Great White North. It had to be the funnest trip I had been on yet though. Got to do a lot of playing, a lot of talking, and a lot of hanging with newly found friend, Paul Baloche. Definitely a trip I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

In April I went overseas for the first time, to Singapore and Indonesia. I didn’t quite know what to expect. I was half nervous and half excited. Ok, maybe more like 70-30. Singapore was fun, very welcoming and the church we played at felt really nice. I couldn’t help but feel like it wasn’t all that different from the states. But then we took a ferry across the sea to Batam Indonesia. Even from looking at the water, you could tell there was a difference. Singapore is like one giant city. Batam was like a jungle. We got into a bus and weaved through all these back roads. Then we arrive at this very old church. It looked like something built in the mid-late 1800’s. No bathroom, no air-conditioning. We knew something was going to happen though, we weren’t just expecting it, we were feeling it. We took part in their church service, we played a couple sets. Then it looked like the night would be over. They then tell us that it’s customary for them to greet us (shake hands) after the service. We’re thinking ok the leaders of the church want to greet us, sounds good! Well, what they meant was that EVERYONE in the church would line up, and greet us… 500-700 people, coming up to each one of us one by one. At first it was a little weird, but then after the 300th or so handshake, it became natural. Most people know me as not really being a people person. A kind of shy, quiet introvert. This experience stirred something up in me. I wanted to know these people! It turned from being a weird experience, to something that I wanted more of. I wasn’t just shaking hands now, I was trying to get as much conversation out of these people that I could fit into a few second period. I’ll never forget that. It was probably the best experience of the year for me.

Free To Live Tour. This was my first “bus tour”. The Dboys getting on a tour bus and embarking on a week-long tour. This was a lot of work, because we didn’t have a whole crew. So set up and tear down was up to us. The playing became a bit of a minor role. But the message of the tour, changed my outlook on life forever. Tom Davis has an organization called Children’s Hope Chest, which rescues victims of sex-trafficking. It’s a horrible reality that is out there in every city. Chances are, where you’re reading this, there is sex trafficking going on near you. It was a great honor to serve with that organization and the staff involved to help bring awareness of it to the world. Of course, a bus tour has quite a few fun light moments. I never slept like I did on the bus. A little bunk, pitch black, with a low purr of an engine beneath me. Of course the smell of a bunch of dudes, but that’s part of it haha. It was also great getting to know Meredith Andrews. She joined us on the tour and we got to play a few of her songs. Very anointed and honest worship.

Nashville. After the tour, we then flew to Nashville to work on our new album. I had the demo’s for a while, and worked on them a bit. But it’s hard to come up with parts and ideas until you really play them as a band. We get to the studio, The Castle. Hank Williams, U2, a picture of The Beatles in the foyer. This place was legendary. Not only as a studio, but as a hideout for Al Capone… Paul Maybury shows up (drummer, producer). This guy’s a legend. A master at his craft, and an all-around great guy. Thick Australian accent, and a samurai style haircut that makes you look twice. He made us feel right at home though, and probably one of the easiest/hardest/best producers I’ve ever worked with. Stu G came in a little later. It was to be me and him doing electric guitar duties on this record. Needless to say, I was a little excited. Very soft-spoken guy, very articulate. When he talks, he means what he says. The same thing comes off in his playing. I’ve done lots of studio work so far in my life. I like to think I have a good understanding of how to work in a studio. Watching Stu schooled me quite a bit. These guys really are next-level. One instance Paul was referencing a guitar lick that Stu did months ago on another record. Stu then instantly, pulls up the exact tone, and plays the exact riff, perfectly. That right there, is a true studio musician. Perfection in tone, tuning, intonation… For one of our new songs (titled Wonderful), I dialed in this 16th note tremelo effect and played this really high B power chord. I thought it was kinda cool, but I wasn’t sure. Stu says to me “hey Matt! I like that thing you’re doing there, you should do that”. I say “yea I’m not really sold on it”. He then says “No it’s awesome. If you don’t play that, I’m going to come over there and smash your face in”… Needless to say, I played it. ;) He was joking of course, but knowing me and my sense of humor, I appreciated it highly.

Another moment in Nashville that I’ll never forget, was the outro to Take Me To The River. It came time for the last part of the song, and it was time for the guitars to unleash. I was thinking, “Of course Stu is gonna rip something up on this one, I should lay back probably”. Paul says through the talkback, “Pacco let’s go ahead and get you both doing a solo, something that works together, at the same time”. I’m saying to myself, me doing a dual guitar solo with Stu G? Are you kidding me? The solo was epic, Stu getting up out of his chair and rocking out was epic. But what was more epic than all of that was the worship experience we had in that song. We were all listening back to it and dancing, singing, hands lifted… It was about 2am and no one in the room was tired. Incredible.

Desperation Conference. This was my first conference getting to play with the band. I didn’t know what to expect. Everyone said this was their favorite event to do because it’s home. And it really felt like home. Big intro, videos going, crazy lights… I tried not to get caught up in it, because I had this overwhelming feeling of thankfulness the entire conference. I didn’t deserve to be there I told myself. Surely there were better. Surely there were more deserving. But God told me “you are deserving”. I felt for a long time, that this was my purpose. To lead people into a deeper place with God through worship. It had nothing to do with where I was, what kind of lights there were, what kind of amp I’m using. I had a responsibility. So I went into that first night with that attitude, that I had a responsibility to be used by God that night. By the end of the conference, it was celebration time. The conference was amazing, and I learned many things. Many ways to stay humble, but also to accept the responsibility God has given me.

Summer vacation with Mel. This was our second time going to NY together. My mom recently had some major surgery, which left her bedridden for a number of months. I knew it would bless my parents for me and Mel to be there to help take care of things. But I wasn’t prepared for the blessing it would have on me. Seeing the way my dad, without hesitation, took care of my moms every need. The way he loves her and cares for her. Never showing a sign of frustration or tiredness. That’s the man I want to be. And seeing the way my mom, amidst having yet another surgery, never losing faith and praising God no matter what she’s feeling like. That’s the man of God I want to be. I’m so thankful for my parents, and for Mel and her parents. I’m never short on examples of who I want to be.

Those are just a few of the trips and experiences from this year, I don’t have time to go into everything. But as my schedule has winded down the last few weeks, I’ve been pondering. Do I deserve this? What does all this mean? I do NOT want to become a Christian Rockstar… Fact is, we are called to a purpose. We have a responsibility. God gave me my gifts, and I choose to use them to honor him. On that stage, it has nothing to do with me. It has everything to do with Him. He is the center of it all. Anyways, a bit long-winded. Have a very Merry Christmas.

stug:
